Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

SBN's PSU blog Black Shoe Diaries is great and one of my favorites of the network, so I was doing some recon for this week's game. Over there, there's a FanPost about "Maryland Hate Week." Aside from being unimaginative - they took it from a Michigan State site, kudos on that one - and unfunny (we have more than two colors we must suck!), at least they're being proactive.

And hey, they even started a little #MDHateWeek hashtag on Twitter. How cute. Too bad no one really cares.

See, Penn State went 3-15 in the Big Ten last year. They won 11 games. Maryland-Penn State would've been a good matchup in football this year. You want to get a rivalry going there, I'm all for it. But, uh, in basketball? Stay in your place. Maryland has as many national championships since 2000 as PSU does NCAA tournament appearances. We have real teams to play pretty soon.

If you have a Twitter, feel free to go to work on #PSUHateWeek. Let's get that baby trending. First look coming later today.

This is coming from a Maryland basketball fan who goes to Penn State

BSD does Hate Week for EVERYONE in football and for big games in basketball. Learn to laugh a little.

Stop feeling special. Nobody at Penn State wants a rivalry with Maryland. We know our basketball program is a joke. That’s why the post is funny.

And funny how you’d be all for a rivalry in football when it is literally the exact opposite of what a Maryland/Penn State basketball rivalry would be. It used to be a “rivalry,” if you could call it that. Penn State has gone 35-1-1 against Maryland. You’re comparing one of the most storied programs in football with… Maryland.

are you saying...

that you’re a Maryland basketball fan and a Penn St football fan?

.

I’m from Maryland and grew up as a Maryland sports fan. Maryland basketball is my favorite team in all of sports by a mile, but I chose to go to Penn State and thus have become a Penn State sports fan. It’s not like I don’t root for PSU basketball too, but I’m a Maryland basketball fan at heart, and I’ll be cheering for them on Wednesday.

But understand nobody is trying to start a rivalry. It’s just a blog tradition to do that.

I am laughing at it

Trust me, this post was done in jest. I’m entirely aware that no one in Penn State wants a rivalry in basketball, much for the same reasons that Maryland cancelled the football one. That was just the easiest terminology to use. But if they get a hate week, we’ll get a hate week.

The football comment is off, though. Maryland-Penn State used to play and Maryland got dominated. Penn State was at its height then and, for much of the time, Maryland was awful. But the teams had the same record this year, Maryland’s QB is a freshman and will be around for a few more years, and Maryland’s recruiting has picked up. The 2-10 season was awful, but the program appears to be trending back upwards.

Penn State has been relevant exactly two years out of the past ten in basketball. Maryland football has been relevant at least five or six years out of the past ten. Maryland’s way closer in football than Penn State is in basketball.

Not trying to start a fight here

but please define “relevant” as it pertains to football. Maryland still plays in the ACC, which is a small step above the Big East in terms of football conferences. You’ve won one ACC championship and gone to a major bowl game (which you lost, lopsidedly) once in the past 25 years. In what way has Maryland football been relevant “five or six years out of the past ten?”

I’ll be the first to admit that our basketball program is a joke and I fully expect you to crush us when we play tomorrow night, but for you to pretend that your football program is in any way competitive with Penn State’s… that’s kind of a joke too.

"Why?"

Response when I asked a kid I work with (who went to PSU) if he was going to watch the game. About par for the course I’d say :)

Count me in on this one

I have a bunch of friends who went to Penn State, and I hate them all.

I remember when we used to play them in football

There was a rivalry with Penn St in football. We used to play them every season before they joined the big 10. They kicked our ass almost every season. It was not fun…

Penn St. has a 35-1-1 record against Maryland in football…
