After a week of extreme highs (Faust's National committment on ESPNU) and lows (Lewis and Space going elsewhere), where does the future of the 2011 Maryland recruiting class stand. I know there has been a lot of debate from the Terps fan nation on player preference regarding this class and we sit at the start of November with only two out of four possible spots filled and very little options to fill the two vacancies.
Thinking just months back having many options at each position and constructing a wish list of the best of the best we only have a slim few left to choose from and even those options are no guarantee. I know there has been a lot of discussions on not excepting less then the best, but what happens if the two obvious options of Desmond Hubert and Adjeru Baru go elsewhere?
I looked up a couple of possible options from the various big boards on recruiting and I have came up with a couple players that were compared to several players who were considering Maryland, but went elsewhere. Obviously I have no idea that these players even know where Maryland is, let alone are interested in playing basketball for the Terps.
Potential options:
Ben McLemore - Oak Hill, VA, obvious Peshon Howard territory to get us in the door. Ben is the #17 ranked player in the nation on ESPN and Rivals and #6-8 SF in the class. Other schools considering Kansas, Ohio State, GT, Tenn and Missouri. Kansas is an obvious big name and Ohio State has been up in the national recruiting classes, but I think MD could spark some better options then the rest of the players for this recruit.
Tyler Harris - St. Benedicts, NJ, obvious connection is older brother Tobias. Though he went elsewhere Maryland still was listed in his final three. Little brother is not quite as good as big brother, but has been compared to Antwan Space and Dorrey Finney-Smith. Plus, his other suitors are nothing notable: Iowa, St. Johns, Providence and NC State. Maybe Maryland can get involved late and see if we can use the fact we worked with big brother to try and land him.
DeAndre Daniels - IMG Academy in Fla. He is a Texas decommittment this past August and has reclassified as a 2011 since he had to go to post grad. I know Gary typically does not go after academically problemed players, but this may be a guy worth looking at since we do not have many options out there. Competition for his services ranges from big time in Kentucky and UCLA to lower level NC State, UNLV and USC. There could be some money being thrown at this guy if you take a look at the major players so this guy might not be a possibility. But he can play, so I thought worht listing.
I thought I would throw out a couple guys that I wouldnt mind seeing Bino get a hold of and start up some talks to gauge the interest level. I know our best recruiter Sterling Gibbs reported earlier that Desmond Hubert had a blast and Gibbs feels great about his visit, but I will stay reserved on this one until I hear differently.
DOES ANYBODY ELSE KNOW OF ANY OTHER OPTIONS OUT THERE FOR MARYLAND FOR THE 2011 CLASS? ALSO, WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH DEVIN LANGFORD FROM ALABAMA, ESPN LISTS HIM AS INTERESTED IN MARYLAND?
