Jordan Williams not on Yahoo/Rivals Top 50 Players List?
Don't know if anyone else has been following this, but yahoo/rivals has been doing a pre-season countdown of the top 50 players in college basketball. Now, we all know that Jordan Williams has been named to the long list for the Wooden award (which consists of 50 players). This means that a lot of (supposedly qualified) people do think he is one of the top 50 players in the country. However, to date, Williams has not appeared on the rivals list. So my question is, do people think J Dub is one of the top 50 players? It certainly seemed like it at the end of last season, especially given his performance in the NCAA tournament. Discuss.

Am I the only one who thinks JDub will not improve on his totals from last year?
IMO, Sean Mosley will come into his own this year, be the team’s unquestioned leader, and considerably outperform his teammates.
Last year’s team played to JDub’s strengths. We all know he has great hands, and Greivis was able to put the ball in places where only he could get it. A lot of his baskets last year were relatively easy ones.
This year, we don’t have a playmaker like Vaz to get the ball into his hands. I think that JDub will match last season’s point totals, or maybe even see a dropoff, and slightly improve on his rebounding totals.
So to answer your question, no, I do not think he is one of the top 50 players. But I think Sean Mosley will end up being a pleasant surprise and end up as a consensus top 50 player by the end of the season (if such a distinction exists).
Interesting point about Mosley...
…I think he has the chance to be good. He showed flashes last year, and even when he wasn’t scoring, always hustled and played good D. He’s a complete basketball player.
I actually think with Greivis gone, Williams becomes the focal point of the offense. Who can guard him in the ACC? He’s a monster. His points definitely will go up; with more minutes, his rebounds should increase as well. I don’t think it’s out of the question for him to average 15 pts, 10 rebs.
I think he has the potential for 15 and 10.
But as I said, I don’t think he will actually improve on his point totals from last year.
He has never really shown the aptitude to take defenders 1-on-1. Until he shows me that, I see him averaging 9 points, 9 boards a game (similar to last year).
Call me crazy, but I see our offense revolving around the 2/3 positions (i.e. Cliff Tucker, Sean Mosley, and AB to an extent). Don’t think Jordan can carry the load.
You have high expectations for Tucker, Mosley, and Bowie!
Well, all have had moments of greatness during their careers. I think they’ll be good, but if they haven’t dominated up until now, chances are they won’t dominate this coming year. You can say what you want about Williams’ scoring last year, but he showed he can dominate the glass. As long as he does that, he can score 7-8 points a game just on putbacks and garbage points. I’m fairly confident he can score an additional 7-8 points in the flow of play.
Tucker, Mosley, and Bowie: is any of them a consistent 15 point threat at this point? I guess Mosley is closest (he averaged 10 pts/game last year), but does he really have the type of game to be a legit 2-guard in the ACC? He plays hard, but he’s basically been used as an undersized small forward up until now. The other two – talented, but not consistent.
Keep talkin shit and downplaying J-Dub....Gary needs more ammo for motivation!

Don't think he was "talkin shit" or downplaying J-Dub
The concern is a very real one; if he’s double-teamed and Maryland has no perimeter threat, or if Bowie doesn’t take to the PG role as we all hoped, then he’ll suffer a little because of it.
I know, Ben, just being a little tongue-in-cheek
But don’t think that Gary isn’t looking for ways to push his soph. to another level this year, and I wouldn’t put it past him to let him hear these ‘criticisms’ as motivation. Gary is a master at pushing the right buttons.

sounds like both of you have high expectations
In my opinion, it’s all speculation until we see it on the court. kckb8 is right though, J Dub will miss vasquez’s playmaking ability. At the same time, the flex offense will still run through him so he will atleast match last season’s contributions just by being the big man in the flex.
It all comes down to how good his teammates are at getting him the ball and how decisive he is in the post at scoring and passing. Best case scenario is that the returning starters pickup where they left off. Worst case is they lose some offense due to lack of a playmaker like Greivis.
I agree with you all
I think Testudo4lunch said it best, its all speculation, but most of this talk on this site is as well. Regardless of speculation, obviously MD is going to need to find a leader or have several players add up to a leader. I have a feeling this team will play just as their players have in the past. The team will not have a “go-to” player but several who step up and have great performances. This will probably benefit us at times, but will lead to inconsistenancy due to not having that #1. I think we will see what a lot of our younger and older players are made of and see who is going to step up.
On Jordan Williams, I think he will have a stellar year, but I think many people are a little to high on him and what his production will be. I think he will be around 15 and 10 and could have some games where he’s in the upper 20’s. I think he will have to step up at times with the rest of the team.

Yeah thats well said.
Maybe I was exaggerating a little when I said JDub wouldn’t improve at all.
15 and 10 seems pretty accurate…I guess I was just a little caught off guard by JDub blowing up like he has.
up tempo team
Hayes and Vasquez weren’t fast. If Weijs can do the “22 drill” and JWILL without the weight can run and Padgett can run and Stogin has quicks, Howard can pass, Parker can slash and Mosely,Tucker, and Bowie can run. I’m excited. When is the first game?
