Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

"After (Ross's) commitment back in April he stayed around this summer and worked on his game," Vetter said. "He got better. He didn't play AAU, which I think was a big plus for him because he had an opportunity to actually work on his game, not just go around and play games. And I think that he got a lot better. The other factor, too, is his mom is out on the west coast, so I think she wanted to be involved in the decision. And when we talk in terms of Maryland, we don't talk in terms of a de-commitment. We just re-opened his recruitment to a limited number of schools, and the schools that he re-opened it to are some of the elite of college basketball."
...
"He still has a lot of interest in Maryland, and I think his decision will come this spring, and it will be a more informed decision," Vetter said.

Stu Vetter on Terrence Ross.

I know I'm supposed to want him to be a Terp because he's really good and all, but I am alone in thinking that I don't really want him to end up in College Park that badly at this point?

I love Vetter's interest in Maryland and commitment to the Terps.

At this point, its become evident that Ross will NOT end up in College Park. I’m fine with that.

I come away from this situation more enthused about Vetter’s love of Maryland. It almost seems as if HE is committed to not letting this Ross thing spoil Montrose’s relationship with UMD. Gotta love Vetter.

Yea, thanks Vetter

But I have already fallen in love with Pe’Shon…I think he might be really good

Ross is welcome...

back with open arms, because I know I will forget all of this after he makes his first three pointer. If you take Vetter at his word (which we have no reason not too), and Ross still picks the terps after being pursued by UK, Duke, and Kansas, than it would say a lot about the recruiting going on at UMD in a positive way. I love that Vetter is highly vested in the Terps.

All that being said, I say their is a 5% he is coming to UMD, and I won’t lose sleep over it.

Ross

Does Ross want to be the Terps’ go-to guy, and become a big star, campus hero, and NBA first rounder?

Or does he want to go to one of those so-called elite schools, where he has to work his way up to becoming first, second or third option? And where he will be recruited over by the next 5- star phenom who comes along? He may not be developed in one of those “elite” programs as well as he would as a Terp, where he gets the best game experience (and not some assigned role). As a Terp, Ross would emerge much sooner and more naturally.

How many NBA success stories are there from Duke anyway, compared to all the four and five star recruits Duke gets? Probably not a whole lot.

I don’t blame the kid for wanting to think things over. He is in high school. That’s a sign of growing maturity, to take his decision seriously. The Terps are the only school outside of the top-five-program schools that he is considering. It’s probably a lot better than 5 percent that he computes these odds, and shocks the world by staying with the Terps!

I hear you BBroman...

but we really need an athletic, sharp-shooting guard to compete with the other top ACC teams. Having said that, I’ve lost trust with this kid which has made him less likable but just because I don’t like him as much as other recruits who show, and have shown, true loyalty, it doesn’t mean that I don’t really want him to come to UMD. I’d welcome him anyday.

If Ross Becomes A Terp

…….I would definitely forget about his decommitment, because, if he chooses to become a Terp now, he would be making that decision based on keeping his previous promises to MD coaches and future team mate(s) he helped recruit. He wouldn’t decommit and recommit for any reason other than to fulfill his promises. What MD has to offer has not changed. The only thing that has changed is his potential to get into the so called “Elite” programs. I don’t see any advantage for those “Elite” programs to further Ross’ possibility at playing at the next level over MD. In fact I would argue that Gary is a better coach than some or all of the other prospects Ross is considering. Academics? maybe Duke would be considered better, but I don’t believe the other 2 schools have any advantage in academics.

So, if Ross were to recommit, I would give him credit for building his character by keeping the promises he made. I would respect him and be a fan long before he finally sets foot on the floor of the Comcast Center in a Terp uni.

Yes, you are alone...

he is the exact type of player maryland needs at this point…it sucked that he reopened his recruitment, but as vetter said, he hasn’t decommitted so if he does actually come to MD (which I doubt) I will def. welcome him to the Terps.

Don't want him

It goes to character. Ross shows zip.

Building Character

This is Ross’ chance to grow up some. He is a young adult, and character is created and built during this time. It’s OK to make mistakes. It’s how you fix/handle those mistakes that says most about your character. It appears Ross is in good hands with Vetter. We’ll just have to see how it pans out. I’m sure Gary is working Plan B, which may turn out to be Plan A+. Many possibilities may pop up between now and then, for both MD and Ross. Either way, I’m sure Gary will field a competitive team next year.

Parker

One thing that is lost in all the Ross talk is how good Mychal Parker is. Ross is big loss, no question, but most services have Ross and Parker rated close to even. Even withouth Ross, the perimeter is stacked next year with Tucker, Bowie, Mosley, Howard, Stoglin, and Parker. And I think Parker has just as good a chance as Ross to be an elite college player. We really need to try and add C.J. Leslie to give us an elite inside presence to go with the stacked perimeter.

Im at fault of this just as much as anyone else...

Ive come to realize that many of us, including myself, have already started to throw ross under the bus. yeah i know the re-commitment rate is extremely low, but theres a first for everything. i dont like the way the kid has handled some of this stuff, but if by some small miracle he ends up at maryland and is a star…who here is still gonna be angry at him? obviously, no one. so as long as he tells us umd is still in the running, we should probably leave him alone. if he ends up picking duke in the spring, then we can bitch and moan about his loyalty. but for now, we are only hurting ourselves by taking shots at him and his character (especially if he is reading this stuff). its far too interesting to speculate over the matter until his decision in the spring, but we should just leave it at that…speculation.
