Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Puts him at 48th best in Maryland history. Can't believe he didn't receive a mention from the commentators at any point. In fact, no one seemed to realize it at all. Easily the quietest player on that list.

Not to be jerkey but

Commontators did mention it during the FSU game. Remember my reflecting on the silent awsomeness of it.

They did mention it...

But I do think Hayes is arguably the most underrated player in the ACC right now. The announcers, other than mentioning his approach to 1000 points, barely talked about Hayes in the FSU game. They NEVER mentioned that he was 5-for-6 from 3pt range, yet somehow they were constantly talking about Dulkys from FSU (who admittedly is deadly) and what a threat he was. They introduced the game talking about MD’s “big 3” (GV, LM, SM), which is a crime IMO because Hayes is the glue and stability of our offense. And when his shot is on like in that game, our offense soars. Do those clowns over at the WF blog still have a “Hayes of the Day” award? That concept is obsolete for this year, IMO.

I think Hayes’ continued confidence and success in our offense is a big key to our season. Last year he played well down the stretch and we were a different team.

im a fan of hayes

but he needs more consistency to be ranked among the upper tier of acc basketball. i would rank him 5th on our team, after gv, lm, sm, and jw. let alone one of the better players in the acc.

More consistency?

Consistency hasn’t been a problem for Hayes this year, in fact I think he and Mosley have been our most reliable players in terms of what they contribute. He’s had a few off games shooting the ball but has consistently run our halfcourt offense better than anyone. I track plus-minus stats, and our offense is consistently better when he is in the game. I also think his defense, while flawed, is not as bad as many think. He is a role player, but an important one on a team that lacks another consistent outside shooter.

Besides all that, I never said he was “one of the better players” in the ACC, I said he was underrated. He is a very solid player and IMO, the guy we could least afford to lose other than Greivis. If Hayes was out, you can bet that our offense would grind to a halt. In fact, it often does grind to a halt when he goes to the bench.

for a guy who was recruited to be a point guard and become the number outside shooting option he’s done pretty well.

Sorry re: the announcers

Never heard em, that’s my bad. I’m basically as scatter-brained as can be right now…real world has hit hit the past few days. Should clear up by Friday.
