Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Is the Fridge on his Final Legs?

Since we're doing mind exercises today, why not do one more?

We've heard the arguments from various camps about Maryland's head coach Ralph Friedgen. Some think it's time to recycle the Fridge and move him to another position in the athletic department, some want him to stay where he is, some want to kick him to the curb (and even some that want to send Franklin with him). But regardless of where you stand on whether you think the Fridge door is half open or closed, what do you think would have to happen before Ralph would be pushed out?

I have to honestly say that unless some crazy scandal came about, I don't see the Terps firing Ralph mid-season. Not when the Athletic department is sitting on 20+ empty suits inTyser Tower. And I don't think he should get fired mid-season. I feel last week's OT win against JMU and this week's loss to Middle-Tennessee State is very similar to Gary and the basketball team after they lost to Morgan State at home last year and after they got trouncing by Duke at Cameron. People were saying Gary's grace period had run out, he couldn't recruit, etc. What happened? The result was the team marching back to the NCAA tournament and Gary putting together a Top 10 recruiting class for 2010. I'm I saying the Fridge can do that? Who knows. I do know that this team, if they just cut out the crazy amount of turnovers, will be so much better. Take away three of the four turnovers in the Middle-Tennesse game, and we're probably not having this conversation right now. And mind you, most of our fumbles weren't balls that were stripped. They were simply dropped by our running backs. That is something that can be improved upon.

I've been extremely torn on how to feel about this team this year. Part of me was cringing and on pins and needles every time we had the ball on Saturday, worried we'd cough it up again. But if you take that away, give our defense a little more rest, and I think we'll be a decent football team. Not an ACC champion football team, but a team that can win between 6 and 8 games and go to a bowl. Now, I'm not saying that is acceptable either, but I'm not sold yet that this team is going to go winless in the ACC (although in the heat of my frustration and anger on Saturday I did tell multiple people that's what I thought). The point is, I think we'll know a lot around 7:00 P.M. on Saturday. Either the players ship up, start playing more fundamentally sound or they don't, which means they're not listening to Fridge's message anymore, don't have confidence in themselves, and that this could be a long season. But even if the Terps go winless the rest of the way, I doubt they'd fire Ralph mid-season. I think they'd let him gracefully retire at season's end. And honestly, he deserves that. You have to remember folks, although we haven't been as successful as we were in the first 3 years of the Friedgen era, we've mostly gone to a bowl game since Ralph has been here and we've been in contention for the ACC title late in the season. That is a far cry from over a decade of not even being .500 overall. And for that, I say Ralph has earned the right to stay in charge, at least through this season.

What do you think? Will the Fridge survive the season? Will the team turn it around? Is there anything that could happen that would get Ralph fired mid-season? Let us know what you think!

100% chance Ralph makes it through the year

A turnaround is possibly – last year’s team only beat Delaware by 7 and lost to MTSU, too – but unlikely. Regardless, Fridge is definitely making it through the year, IMO. It’s the offseason he’ll have to worry about.

IMO he definitely makes it through the year

I also am more inclined to think that we will put together a so so season that is not the disaster some are fearing. We won’t be good, but I don’t see us being awful either. The article was on the right track. I think we will eliminate some of the mistakes and be average. I also think Fridge will be here next year with a better team.

Friedgen stays into 2010

I think if Friedgen is asked to retire before his contract, it will come at the end of next year. Entering 2010, the team will have had (1) a full year in Brown’s new defensive scheme and (2) a chance to correct some back luck (and mismanagement) with linemen recruits by getting these young guys some reps. There’s also plenty of time to break in one or two replacements for Turner at quarterback this year. End of next season, there will be no excuses.

The only way I could see him being asked to leave at the end of this season is if we finish with less than four wins. Even then, just a year out from challenging for the Atlantic Division title, I have a hard time seeing Yow asking Friedgen to step down, but I could be wrong.

Finish with less than 4 wins

I guess that’s where I’m differing. I’m hoping to God I’m wrong, but I think 3 or 4 wins seems reasonable right now. That’s why I feel like Fridge is under more pressure. If he gets out of the year with a 5-6 record, he’s safe. Anything less, there will be pressure.

Next year might be as tough as this year, with the possible QB issues. While we like to think one of the guys can handle it, we don’t know. The first few games will probably be rough again, and you know how stubborn Fridge gets with QBs. If a solid QB presents themselves, then we’ll be fine.

JC1 is right.

Unless fans abandon the Terps in droves, Ralph has a lot of control over when he steps down. He is here at least through 2010.

Go Terps

The post itself is ridiculous. There must be something in the drinking water in the DC area that leads to extreme overreactions when it comes to the local sports teams. This is Ralph’s ninth season. In his eight years the team has gone to six bowl games, going 4-2 in those games. Before Ralph’s arrival, the team’s last bowl game was 1989. I said 1989. Before that, 1985. His overall record at Maryland is 65-37. Like Gary, he doesn’t deserve the kind of nonsense that is going on regarding his tenure as head coach. He’s done a solid job at Maryland. The team fell one game short of the ACC title last year and beat four top-25 teams. Only three other D-1 schools accomplished that feat last season (USC, Texas, Florida). After three games this season people are putting up posts about his removal timeline LOL. BTW, if you think you’re getting a high profile, accomplished head coach in here after treating an alum with a record of accomplishmen tlike Ralph’s by firing him after this season, drink some more water. Ralph will be here through next season at the very least.

Let's say we go 2-10

Does Ralph stay through next year in that case? What about 1-11?

Saying he has to be fired is ridiculous. We’re not saying that. But if this team wins four games or less, which is likely, his departure is a legitimate topic to discuss. If he has that bad of a year, maybe he retires himself.

I know the strides Maryland has made in football. But that’s exactly why there needs be to be continued pressure – to make sure we don’t lose them and regress.

Fridge deserves more respect

I’m glad I’m not a head coach. People love you like you are family when you win, and hate you like you are garbage if you lose. Nice to see that Penn State didn’t dump Paterno in his down years. Penn State from 2000 – 2004 they were 26 – 33 with only one winning season. Since then they are 43 – 11. Sometimes you just have a crappy record. I don’t think canning the coach is usually the best answer.

Go Terps

You guys gotta be kidding.

You say: Saying he has to be fired is ridiculous. We’re not saying that. But if this team wins four games or less, which is likely, his departure is a legitimate topic to discuss.

Blah blah blah.

How do you know what is likely?? Do you guys know ANYTHING about sports? That’s why they play football games boys. The fact is, putting up a post speculating on a coach of Fridgen’s caliber after three games in one season is a bunch of crap. And as of now, it is not a legitimate topic, but typical for overreacting sports fanatics.

But that’s exactly why there needs be to be continued pressure – to make sure we don’t lose them and regress

Oh brother. Who are you kidding? How is “continued pressure” after three games reasonable or fair? it’s not. The post is laughable.

Broman, some more on ticket sales and Ralph

Here is a good Patrick Steven’s article from last year…http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/aug/05/marylands-season-ticket-base-not-increasing/. It should give you some idea of how difficult it will be fire Ralph. Don’t place too much stock in that statement about the 30K base of fans. We don’t know if the money is needed for the football program. We don’t know how it is being used by the athletic department.
