Harris Visits Kentucky
Well, this sound like a lot of bad news for us.
Tobias Harris recently visited Kentucky on his way to Oregon for a tournament and he was impressed. Calipari showed him how the offense Tobias runs now is very similar to Kentucky's. Tobias also met with the president of Kentucky University. Torrel Harris said they really enjoyed the visit and are now considering Kentucky. Not good! This could be bad for us trying to get him.

Well, there goes the "loyalty" deal
Torrel Harris: Stretch Stephenson Part II.
Seriously, what happened to “We’ll reward the coaches on us the earliest”?
douches
these dads are a bunch of douches living out their dreams via their kids
this is what UMD fans get for a coach who runs a clean program
fyi for anyone who has heard/read a recruit saying “coach calipari has done great things with getting kids to the nba” that translates to “imma get paid” to go play for UK
okay but what’s wrong with that? college isn’t always about getting an education, he’s gonna be one-and-done so why wouldn’t he go play for calipari? Besides Steve Francis when have we gotten a big-time recruit who made it big in the NBA? Travis Garrison was a McDonald All-American and is playing in Europe. If a kid wants to stay for more then a year then we have a chance, but college is clearly a pit-stop for Harris so this is no surprise to me.
Well, you know...
he hasn’t actually committed yet. I agree with terpsfan that if he’s a one-and-doner, Kentucky makes sense. I have no problem with one and doners, and Cal has a history of producing them.
That said, Torrel looks like another Stretch, Carl Henry, or Ma Selby. I have issues with the way he’s running his son’s recruitment. He’s way too vocal to the press, is way too prominent in the recruiting process, and seems to be making the decision as much as Tobias is. I’m tired of him saying to the press: “Don’t send an assistant coach to talk to him. We’ll reward coaches who have been loyal, who’ve been on us a long time, who watch us a lot, etc.” then turning around and taking on UK as soon as they mention any interest.
Oh, and the use of “we” by parents of recruits has got to go. The parent is not making the decision. The coach is not recruiting the parent to play. “We” don’t enjoy visits, the recruit enjoys visits. It annoys the hell out of me.
Parents and "We"
The parent is making the decision if they are a bunch of douches living out their dreams via their kids, which it seems some of these parents are doing. They remind me of the toddler beauty pageant parents. Overbearing, annoying and dangling these kids like a puppet master. It is one thing to want the best for your kid and to try to attain this with a watchful eye, but Stretch and a few other parent/manipulators are embarrasing to the whole process of college recruiting, ie Miss St/USC fiasco.
no one is about to have a recruits best interests in mind more than a father. You can’t fault a man who is there to look out for his son. FWIW Torrel Harris is a former professional agent who has represented 2 hall of fame basketball players. If I were tobias harris I would want to make sure I went somewhere where I was wanted by the head coach as well. If I was a potential top ten recruit Why would I commit to a program where the head coach is watching his number one option and the assistant coaches are watching me?
We are in his top 10 and potentially in his top 5 why WOULDNT someone climbing the ranks as fast as Harris listen to what Kentucky is talking about?
Has Maryland been eliminated? No? Have we made this kid our priority? No? Calipari did for 2 weeks imagine if gary did the same. It’s not about “clean” recruiting, its about Recruiting period.
exactly
the problem with people like these is that they’re dishonest. they say they that they’ll reward loyalty but a last minute team like KU comes in and they appear to be the front runner. i dont mind if a kid goes to KU since they would get a ridiculous amount of exposure, but the parent shouldnt act like a douche and lie about all the loyalty nonsense.
Let's not pretend
That we have been recruiting this kid hard from the beginning. Remember a few months ago when we had little to no interest in this kid, but threw everything at his AAU teammate. Buie? We are lucky to still be on his list and still look like we will make his top 5 which shows something, but we can’t pretend that he was ever our priority.
We have not been recruiting him hard
guys we’ve moved on from harris….it’s time for all of you to move on as well…
yes and the fact of the matter is, if we’re mildly recruiting a top 20 player outside of the DMV, we have no shot, especially if his stock rises like harris did. Maybe if Harris went to a local school and grew up a terps fan we could have a chance, but as soon as his stock rose are chances fell. face it, we have virtually no chance of landing someone like that
Ok guys, do me a favor
and no more “douche” talk. This might be the first time I’ve ever said no about something (‘cept them meddling Pitt fans, which I wish I didn’t delete because the comment chain was hilarious), but it’s really in poor taste. Plus, you never know who might be reading (one time I got an email from Mike Gilchrist’s father for supposed misinformation that was a different website’s fault, which was weird and cool at the same time – I have no idea how he found it, anyway).
Feel free to criticize, but just be slightly nicer about it.
Maybe
Gotta win be back over first.
Oh, and for the record, feel free to use it in certain circumstances (game threads are generally permissable) particularly when discussing Duke. Just not on recruits/Terps/anyone the majority of us feel neutral or positive about.
Ok, so...
We’re definitely not out of it with Tobias. Not a leader, but we’re definitely still a serious contender.
And yes, I’m pretty sure about this. And no, it’s not a gut feeling.
