2011 Target Cezar Guerrero Makes Greivis Vasquez Look Like John Havlicek

How's that for a headline? (Photo via ESPN)

Awhile back, an article from NBNMagazine (which I have not heard of since) popped up in my RSS feed. It highlighted Cezar Guerrero, a PG from California with a rather long list of suitors. Somewhat unexpectedly, Maryland was among those suitors. I never really gave it much credit, probably because I'd never heard of NBN Magazine before. But at the same time, it was always kind of tucked away in the back of my mind.

When Inside MD Sports (whom I'm probably sounding like a shill for right now, with all my links there) posted their Guide to July, Cezar Guerrero was listed as one of the 2011 prospects. Until today, when I looked it over again, I never really noticed that. But it finally clicked that maybe Guerrero was a legit prospect for the Terps. The next thing I did, understandably, was Google him. Luckily, he had some YouTube mixtapes.

Keeping in mind that this the same fanbase that questioned Greivis Vasquez for being too flashy, be prepared:

Or there's always this mix, which is just as flashy, or this one, in which he's just playing with defenders. If you couldn't handle Greivis's "flair", you better pray we don't land Cezar Guerrero. I could see it happening, though - West Coast connections are improving (commits from Stoglin and Ross, and recruiting guys like Jones, James Johnson, and Alex Kirk), Maryland needs a PG (Quinn Cook is the only PG on the board right now), and the highest profile Hispanic basketball player in perhaps the last 20 years is currently at Maryland. These signs point to Guerrero being a legitimate possibility (okay, so the last one is a stretch).

Personally, I can't wait to hail Cezar (sorry, I had to get that out of my system).

He kind of reminds me of...

…John Gilchrist, in terms of his style of play. I hope we get him…

I kind of want him if only

for Gary’s reaction the first time he tries the move at 0:44 in an ACC game.

great...

moves but it looks like he’s slapping the ball after some of them to get the handle back. Something that he wouldn’t have the opportunity to do many times in the acc. You can never tell how consistent these guys are from these highlight reels. Many of them were awsome moves to get open but they never showed the actual shot afterwards (I assume they were misses). It almost looks like he doesn’t square his shoulders on his jumper but has his right shoulder pointing towards the basket.

If he can be coached to play w/i a system then his ability to create and dish would make him tough to guard and he’d certainly get some highlight coverage on SportsCenter.

Would be a great get if for no other reason than our need for a top shelf PG in the 2011 class.
