Painter Down to Two; Sets Decision Date

Is it just me or does he look a little like Wake Forest forward, Al-Farouq Aminu?

The Terps' last realistic target for the 2009 class (no, not Lance Stephenson), cut his list down to two yesterday and 6 '9 big man DeShawn Painter now lists Maryland and NC State as his finalists.  This comes off the heels of Painter's visit to College Park this past weekend where he apparently played pick up at Comcast with some pretty big names.  Word is that he really enjoyed the trip and will make a decision shortly after he graduates high school on May 17th.

I know there's been mixed feelings on this blog about Painter so I'll give my take.  Last year, Maryland lacked a real inside presence (this shouldn't be news to anyone).  This year, Gary has already brought in two freshman bigs to help beef up the front court in Jordan Williams and James Padgett, (this shouldn't be either). The odds that one of these bigs actually pans out is greater if there are three players (adding Painter) as opposed to just two.  For this simple reason, I'm all for the get.

How do you all feel about Painter?  Is he worth the '09 'ship? Would the Terps be better off saving it for 2010 and hopefully using it on a more highly-touted big like Terrence Jones or Tobias Harris?  Let's hear some debate.

Wow 'bagold'

you just flipped ’tiimblitz’s’ switch again!

I think he would be a good get. I look at it like this: Jordan Williams is a mystery, noone seems to feel comfortable saying he will immediately step into the ACC and show out. James Padgett is unpolished but does dirty work under the rim. So Deshawn would give us that one more guy, hell, he might start over James or Jordan! I think that with Dino, JW, Padge, and Painter we would solidify our Bigs for years to come.

Although i’ve heard alot about Deshawns lack of emotion for the game, that could hurt him because we all know that Gary dosen’t play kids that suck in practice. lol Its hard to contribute in your warm-up suit. He better start hustlin or he’ll be Cliff Tucker 2.0

One more question, Since Gary benches players that suck in practice,

if Gary was the football coach, who the heck would play QB? lol

I'd think they'd still come if they wanted to

Both seem to consider themselves three/four tweeners anyway.

good point...false choice to begin with

however…we may no longer be interested b/c we need to lock up a wing guy who can break down off the dribble…

how likely?

Just how likely do you think it is that Painter will choose Maryland over NC State?

Its close

The guys from one MD site think we have the edge right now. Guys over at the NC State site think they have it. Safe to say, it’s pretty close. The whole thing should be resolved within a couple weeks

Definetly

He is definely worth a scholorship. We need depth at the post position. If he signed with Maryland, how many scholorships would we have left for the 2010 class?

Scholarships

If Painter signs, we’d have three for 2010. If he doesn’t, we’ll have four.

Don't forget Goins!

Once Goins’s departure is confirmed, you can boost next year’s number to four with Painter and five without. Of course, two are currently spoken for.

Burney

It actually depends on what goes on with Burney. As of now, he is still in a boot and there has been talk about him not being able to suit up again. If he is still on scholarship by 2010 AND we sign Painter, the Terp will only have two additional scholarships to offer for 2010 (in addition to the ones they’ve already handed out to Stoglin and Ross). If Burney is not on scholarship by ‘10 and we get Painter, the Terps will have three. If we don’t end up with Painter, you can bump each of those numbers up by one.

I say "Why not"?

My prediction will be “19 – 11 entering the ACC tournament” anyway

Somebody should make a comic called "Tulowitzki the Combat Shortstop". I'd read it.

Would be surprised if he chose NC St over MD

There is no comparison between Sid Lowe and Gary. Period. On top of that, State will always be the also mentioned when it comes to North Carolina ACC Hoops until they can have a major turnaround in the program that I don’t see coming anytime soon. I will admit that I know nothing about their incoming committments though.

Deshawn

Terrapin Times reports that there is breaking news on Deshawn Painter. Are they re-reporting old news or do they have new news?

Decision Date

I’ve heard rumors that he may be moving his decision date up earlier than initially expected…other than that, nothing new in terms of leaning towards one school or the other
