Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

According to the source, Pastner would hire former Kansas player Carl Henry as the program's director of operations, which would keep signed recruit Xavier Henry, Carl's son, in the program. Xavier Henry, a 6-6 wing, is a McDonald's All-American and top-five prospect in the class of 2009.

And just like that, the dream evaporates. If Henry's dad goes to Memphis, Xavier would go to Memphis, meaning it'd be open for Lance to go to KU. What a turnaround.

Dude! This is a joke right?!

Why do you gotta say that man? The O’s just chased CC off the mound!! Teixeira just went 0-4 and blew it in crunch time! Today wasnt hot like yesterday!! ….It was a GREAT day! …….Until i read this trash! So do you think that Lance will still go? After being their “plan B?” After never bringing up the fact they have no schollies?

Well, without Lance & GV, next year will not be what i’ve been looking forward to! I think if GV stays, we’re a top 25 team…even without Lance! But having neither WOULD SUCK!…..LIKE MARK TEIXEIRA!

We would be OK with out GV or LS

The incoming big guys will help a ton, I believe that Milbourne and Hayes are going to have strong senior seasons, Mosely is going to develop into the scorer we know he can be (leading scorer in Baltimore history), and Dino, Bowie and Tucker will improve. We might even get something from Jin Soo. Maybe I’m crazy but I see some upside with that squad.

I hope your right, but

we would lack a “go-to guy” badly! I know Landon will have a better year next year because he’ll be back at the 3 buthe’s not going to be ALL-ACC or anything like that! And Vaz runs the offense far…….FAR better than AB. So while i hope you’re right, i’m having a problem believing it.

Without GV & BR…looks something like this,
                        PG-Eric and AB
                        SG-Sean and Cliff
                        SF-Landon and Cliff
                        PF-Dino and Padgett
                        C-Williams and Jerome

I dont see much points…..BUT i think if there’s a coach in this country that can get it done, we know who it is!

don't forget Kim

without BR, Kim becomes important…we will need him to make 2-3 three pointers a game

If the only reason he didn't go was b/c of Henry

Then yes, yes I think he’d still go. If there was another reason – which is completely possible – then we’re still in it. I don’t know which is true, but the Henry theory seems the most reasonable one. If Henry goes to Kansas, only positive things come. I wasn’t trying to say we’re done, but it’s definitely not a good thing that he’s staying at Memphis.

talk about dirty recruiting

I know you guys give UConn a lot of beef, but hiring a recruits father just to get the kid to stay at Memphis? Something has to be morally wrong there right? I mean, c’mon.

And also tiimbitz, sadly I disagree with you. If neither BR or GV are at UMD next year, I don;t think the Terps have the capabilites to improve too much. I know there is a lot of talent, but GV was a guy that could take over games when the team was down. I don’t see anyone else on the team who can do that.

I hate to say it, but if neither of those players are Terps next year, they will be in trouble.

sorry

not tiimbitz. DT711, i disagree with you. My bad.

by Joshv37 on Apr 6, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, but sadly

that has become somewhat common in college basketball these days. Kids coaches want something in it for them these days, and in Memphis’s case this is a blantant recruiting strategy to keep their “#1 recruit!” It’s a shame that people can get away with something like that!

And that, since you said Uconn’s deal dosen’t have anything to do with MD, has EVERYTHING to do with MD’s recruiting this year, because the kid we want is supposedly leaning towards Kansas! And if Henry dosen’t go to Kansas, they’ll possibly have an open scholly!

This Sucks!

bribery?

I know it’s not quite the same as offering a recruit a car or money to play, but still. “Hey Xavier, I promise if you play for Memphis, we’ll give your dad a well paying, cushy job!” That’s just ridiculous.

All I know is that Bill Self better make some magic right now, and get Henry to go to Kansas. Offer his dad the assistant coaching job. Or, better yet, make him the athletic director. Whatever it takes. We just need X to take up that scholly at Kansas so big Lance can become a Terp.

Thats EXACTLTY

What it is! This is Rediculious! The fact that that is allowed blows my mind! Hey Gary, hire Melo’s dad as your away game Chaperone, or Rudy Gay’s mom as the team mom! Give me a break!

You can't say that...

Who knows…there are certainly guys capable of stepping up…landon and hayes will be seniors in a very young ACC…

tucker, bowie will be juniors….

mosely has shown he can get it to the rim he just needs to finish…

JWill gives us 10 ppg next year that we didn’t have inside…

it’s really tough to tell..could i see it falling apart, yea…but somehow every year Gary gets to that 19-20 win range no matter who he has

Package Deals like that

Aren’t an every day thing but they’re becoming more and more common. USC has a couple players on staff whose parents got jobs with the university shortly before they signed, Michael Beasley followed his AAU coach to KSU, Kansas hired the father of a signee in a previous year shortly after the kid signed and their are more. Outside the Lines did a pretty damning piece (damning if you think it’s shady anyway) earlier this year focusing on John Wall (I believe) whose AAU coach got a gig at Baylor. They’re never explicit (except in the case of Beasley who said in the piece he was going to go wherever his AAU coach was) so I’m not sure how much the NCAA can do under the current rules but from the sound of things the rules could change since these deals are perceived as underhanded at best.

Thanks

That’s who I was thinking of in regards to Maryland.

Kinda wondering where Prisbell is?

I really thimk he, or anyone else, could light a fire here and get something changed, especially because its so blatant this time.

On the plus side, I heard a rumor that Lance didn’t hold off on his commitment b/c of X, but b/c he was having second thoughts about Kansas. Its coming from a guy who has been right and has been wrong, and I have no idea where/how he got it, but its out there. So maybe this doesn’t matter. That said, I still think Henry had something to do with it.

re: Zags

I hate this guy and I think he might have banned me from posting. Can anyone else comment on this sights right now or is it just me?

I said “You act like St. Johns is still in this for Stephenson. Dude, everyone knows he wants out of NY. It’s Kansas or Maryland.”

And he replied: “By "everyone knows," do you mean anonymous posters on messageboards who don’t talk to the parties involved?”

So I’ve been trying to post this reply below, but it won’t let me. Don’t know if the site is down or if he’s practicing North Korean-esque censorship.

f by “anonymous posters” you mean “Stephenson Sr.” then sure, that’s what I meant.

From Sports Illustrated:
Over the years, Stephenson’s father has mentioned the “hate” that New York fans have for their prodigies and the desire to relocate his son to a passionate fan base where the coach will be tough on him. If those words are to be interpreted as hints, both Maryland and Kansas would seem to be fits, and St. John’s would be out.

How about from your OWN STORY smart guy?
And from Day One he has repeatedly said that he wants to get his son out of New York and that he wants to get away from the "hate" factor in New York.

"One thing we’re looking for is a place [different] from New York City," Stretch told me a while back. "The approach going toward college is to find a nice place that’s excited about basketball but at the same time that’s cozy and secluded which is going to be tough to find."

Next time, do a little research.

No need to get in a pissing match with zags

his reporting is what it is….

lance continues to list saint johns and he’s a big east guy and more specifically a nyc guy…so its not surprising…i think it’s harmless

What a surpise

Another dirty recruiting trick that the NCAA is too dumb to recognize. There should be a ban on hiring family members or AAU team affiliates on a coaching staff

Love the news...

You think it’s legit?

Walk in salary job. Only thing that would be daunting is the overwhelmingly HUGE expectations they have there. Hate to be a coach or key part of the program when they lose their first CUSA game in 4 years…

Still would love to see some kind of logical ban or policy on the package deals from the NCAA. Like they have to keep these clowns that come along for the ride for a minimum of 5 or so years AFTER the recruit in question is no longer w/ the program.
