Q: Should Greivis Vasquez's number be considered for retirement?
With the talk of Greivis either heading to the NBA or possibly pulling out to return for his senior continues, I thought I would stir the pot and propose this question. I remember asking my self this question as I looked up into the rafters moments before the start of the UNC game on Feb 21st, ( By the way those tickets were the best birthday gift ever!!!) and after his historic triple double anwsering this question; yes he does.
Now I know Vasquez hasn't led a team to a National Championship or even an ACC title, but he still is one of the most fasicnating players ever to don the red and black of Maryland. He has played on 2 NCAA tournament teams, both making the field of 32, he always seems to play his best in the big games (most of the time), he seems to progress more and more each year, and he led the team in just about everything this year, which is an amazing accomplishment in the ACC. I think he is one of the greats, and if he returns to school I think he's a lock....but what do you think?

I assume you mean lifting the jersey to the rafters, not retiring the #
They don’t retire #s in college.
Pretty sure there are set requirements for this. I thought you had to win the national player of the year award or make a first team All-NCAA list. If he doesn’t do that, they won’t (and shouldn’t) put him up. He’s a great Terp, but this isn’t a subjective thing and it would dilute the accomplishments of the others who have had their jersey lifted.
Of course, I hope he does get lifted, because that’d mean he came back and dominated for a year.
Yeah thats what I meant...my head is stuck in the NBA with the playoffs
There are requirments? I thought it was based off the school’s judgment or something of that nature. Not some check list they had to follow.

It can be subjective for some schools
But I’m pretty sure that Maryland decided to have certain things that have to be done. It’s not an NCAA thing, it’s a Maryland thing (I think).
Not true
The Terps retired the jersey of Lara Harper this year, but retired the numbers of Toliver and Coleman.
And the All-NCAA list/NPOY award – not sure if that’s true. I’ll look at my media guide and find out for sure.
if he comes back and we make a sweet 16 then yes
otherwise no…
just a gut feeling based on ABSOLUTELY no knowledge of what the standards are
No chace at this point
A lot of better players have come though MD and not had there Jersey lifted.
What have we won with him here? What individual accomplishments does he have to deserve this honor?
Maybe telling his own fans to shut the f up will do it for him.
Don't call it a comeback!
He should have received All-ACC honors considering he put team on his back that lost thier entire inside game, a team supposed to finish at the bottom and led them in every major category and took them one step less than Mcdonalds factory at DOOK. Deserved it just as much as Hayes deserved All-ACC tourney team….come on three DOOKIES on there?!?!
Put yourself in his shoes with all the crap revolving around HIS coach, and internal rift with the AD, the loss of Gus Gilchrist ( South Florida? Really?) forcing them to guard heavy lineup which they were having an off day, and then to have HIS OWN FANS heckle him! On his court! playing his heart out for thier team! for some college kids whose jump shots are as pretty 400 lb women in a thong, give me a break, i want fans who are going to support thier team no matter what. When he’s doing all he can with what he is given….I would have cussed them out too…..plus he aplogized afterwards
Not saying he did not have a nice season
I’m just saying he has no business having his jersey lifted at this point.
What about Francis?
Steve Francis has his jersey in the rafters and he was only around for one average year. I don’t think his jersey belongs up there.
Again, didn't he get named to an AA team?
I thought he did. If so, that would explain it. Of course, I could be wrong about all this which wouldn’t explain anything.
WHOA! "One average year?"
Steve Francis was argueably the greatest player in the NBA at the time (a span of about 5 years!) Not to mention, his time as a Terp, he made some stupid Amazing plays and took over the game whenever he pleased! I’m not sure i would call the Franchize average.

Should not be in the rafters
He is great, but way too inconsistent. He has not accomplished anything THAT spectacular during his 3 years here. All those guys up there have done something great with the teams they were on. If Grevis is considered to be put up there, then so should James Gist.
He needs another year, a few more upsets, a strong ACC tournament and a sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament before he goes up there.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
well if he comes back
i don’t see us not making the sweet 16…
so basically what you are saying is he needs to come back…
think about it…all we lose off of a 2nd round team from last year is Dave Neal and (actually not an insignificant loss) ad brax
but we replace that with at least 2 nice big prospects…plus everyone is a year older

Exactly
I think if Grevis comes back, this team can be a top 25 ranked team all season. With Padgett and Williams coming in, we get some much needed big bodies down low, and IF Lance Stephenson makes Maryland his school of choice, this is a top 3 team in the ACC next year in my opinion.
Just dont think its time for Grevis to leave. We could do some very good things with his leadership and playing style next year.
