Selection Sunday Open Thread

Brackets released at 6:00 pm on CBS. Post any and all reactions here.

FWIW, Joe Lunardi is furiously updating his bracket...he moved UMD down one spot, but now they're playing LSU. I'd love to play LSU, especially because they haven't played a decent team in like two months.

Frank Haith Might be Leaving Miami

Hmm…he was never a great coach, but Miami was worse off before him. Wonder who they’d get as a replacement.

I f*cking told you al

Congrats

You were correct. Did anyone doubt you?

No one here

But CBS sportsline, foxsports, having to listen to everyone talk about what an elite program Tennessee is…

Gary Williams does not lose that game to Mississippi State, bejus.

Tennessee's Lose

That hurts. I think the Terps deserve a bid more than Creighton or Saint Mary’s but the NCAA loves stories and the Terps winning a first round game isn’t as big a deal as a mid-major.

by hyphebren on Mar 15, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

If the "story" idea truly applies

I’m not sure it does, but if it does, we’re in 100%. If they’re that concerned about mid-major stories, they’d care because publicity/money/ratings/insert other cynical term here, right? No popular team (UVa, VT, Georgetown) from the area is even close to getting in. They’ll want the midatlantic to give a **** about the tourney, especially because no one cares about mid-majors anyway.

If they don’t care about mid-majors, we’re in anyway. Win-win, right?

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

It's strange because...

I can’t remember as a Maryland fan ever being this uncertain about getting in the tourney… Usually were worried about what seed we’ll get or we just have no realistic shot.

by NWF on Mar 15, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

On who we might play (assuming we're in)

Ok, so we’re an 11 seed, 10 at best.

That means we would play a 7 or a 6.

So here are the teams that lunardi has ranked 6 and 7:

Ariz. St.
Utah
Marquette
California
LSU
West Virginia
Tennessee
Illinois

Really, I don’t think there is a team on that list that I think the terps won’t have a chance of beating.

However, the team I’d most like to play would probably be Marquette who is nothing without D. James.

The team I’d least like to play is surprisingly Utah. Their best player is a 7’3’’ monster who averages a double double a game. We would have absolutely no answer for him and he would force us to take too many jump shots.

I wouldn’t mind playing Illinois actually. A team who scored 33 points in 40 minutes can clearly be beaten.

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

marquette hasn't really won a game of importance

since james went down…and they’ve had plenty of chances….

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

No, but they've always played well

They haven’t won a big game, but they haven’t been blown out. I don’t think they’re a horrible matchup, but they’re not a great one. Jerel McNeal is pretty good.

My team of choice is still LSU – their conference is ****ing horrible, and I just have a good feeling about that. If we could get Tennessee I’d be ecstatic. I’ll take Illinois. Just please, please don’t get Utah or Arizona State. They would throttle us.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

gimmie a guard oriented team please!

what we want is a team who has no clue how to attack a zone (i.e. get it inside through ball movement)…guard heavy teams try to drive into the middle of the zone…that’s what we want

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

OT: I've been looking at Padge and JWill

They really could be great. I didn’t realize how highly they were regarded. Both just went off their senior years. Rivals still has them at 3*, but that hasn’t been updated in forever. Scout and ESPN tend to be better in hoops (Rivals dominates football, struggles in basketball), and ESPN has both as very high 4 star guys. I’m very intrigued by their potential. Williams will start day one, and if Padgett puts some weight on, he’ll be all-acc before long. Even if Padgett stays at the same weight, if he is just average with his scouting reports, we have another James Gist. Williams could be dominant, actually. Obviously, he’s harder to judge, but even if you scale his numbers to better competition, it’s still pretty sick.

Of course, Stephenson would be the crown jewel, and a lot of insiders in NYC are predicting him to Maryland. I’m actually getting excited about the future.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

Haha not quite yet

Didn’t do it with Gary in mind. I was checking out Lance, didn’t really find anything new, and just started googling the two. They are legit. I gotta say, though, he impressed me with getting these guys before they blew up.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

wisconsin moving closer to the bubble...

now in the last four in…

could lunardi be privy to some leak from the committee and prepping the badgers for some bad news?

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

OT: next year

think about this as a potential recruiting class:

padgett
jwill
vinson
stephenson

when you add those guys to tucker, bowie, mosely, hayes, dino, brax (guys i expect to be back as contributors) and maybe, just maybe GV we are looking at being a top 10 team if all the pieces fall into place…if gv and stephenson come, we are final four material

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

All depends on who develops/leaves

I don’t think we could have all of the four + everyone coming back. Goins may transfer, I think Brax will as well. Tucker could still leave. But still, this lineup:

GV
Hayes
Lance
Milbourne
JWill
——————
Bowie
Mosley
Vinson
Dino
Padgett

That would be a hell of a lineup. Not final four unless Hayes plays like the ACCT, Mosley has a big jump, and JWill has to live up to his rep, but it’d be ACC champ potential. I could see an Elite 8 run.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

brax....

i hope he comes back…he is our next will bowers

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course

Now that we’re hopeful, the odds of Lance coming here have dropped like 65%. I’m bracing for getting left out of the tourney, having Lance Stephenson declare for Kansas, and Vaz declaring he goes pro. Seriously, if Lance comes here, GV probably stays and we’re elite 8 material. If he doesn’t, GV probably leaves, and we’ll probably be NIT-bound. I hate hinging on one recruit’s decision, but we really are right now.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

no way we go to the nit next year

we have too many good young players like mosely, tucker, dino and bowie who will develop…i’ve seen it before…they will never be superstars…but they are already good and their weaknesses are all things you would expect could be addressed….milbourne is a all acc player next year too

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

final thought b4 i move to selection mode

here are the scenarios:

gv stays, stephenson comes, we nab vinson: i think that makes us final four material

gv stays, stephenson comes, no vinson: still final four material

gv stays, no stephenson, but vinson: sweet sixteen material with the potential for a deep run

gv stays, no stephenson or vinson: tourny lock, who knows

gv leaves, stephenson comes, vinson comes: tourny lock, who knows…

gv leaves, no stephenson, but vinson: bubble team

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

that line up would kill people

think about it…all we are missing is someone who has an inside presence…as long as jwill can be a big body inside…that line up would kill people…

expect brax to be our wilbo…five fouls to give…and expect him to develop more touch in the post a la wilbo…

i’m f-ing excited man…even if we don’t get lance…and even if gv jumps…i’m excited…i like the group of core players we get to have on our side the next couple of year…

oh and mosely is a starter next year…no doubt…he’s potential all acc by the time he leaves

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

Over Hayes? Alright

I could see that, I guess. I was thinking Gary might give the senior a nod, especially because he doesn’t care about the starting lineup at all, but Mosley could start in that situation.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

there will be a lot of upsets…I sure hope so

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

ughss...calipari again?

we get it…you think the selection committee has been fair to you and that you should be a one because you’ve not been upset lately…

honestly…how many times is this jackass gonna pre-emptively whine?

He's a boldfaced liar

“I’m just a coach, and I’m not going to get into that, but we have only lost two games and deserve to be a one seed.” He completely flip-flopped within one sentence.

guard play is the key for them…they need someone to get them buckets down the stretch

3 big east number 1s...memphis gets snubbed

probably b/c calipari is such a jackass…his team deserves a number one but nobody likes a whiner

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 6:03 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree

Memphis’ SoS was too low and their conference sucked too hard. They need to play an all-star schedule in the nonconference to ever get another #1.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

top ten rpi tho

just sayin…also give them the eye test…they are looking great…

also

it doesn’t really matter…the top seeds can settle these differences on the court…

Zona the only WTF team so far

If they’re it, I think we’re okay.

HELL YEAH

Maryland in the NCAA’s!!

by fedfan64 on Mar 15, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

Why'd we have to get Memphis

That sucks. No chance at the Sweet 16.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 6:21 PM EDT reply actions

I kinda wanted an 11

So we didn’t have to face a 2 seed. Memphis will probably destroy us.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

dude...sweet sixteen wasn't realistic anyways

we have a good chance to win our first game…that’s all that matters…then…who knows

I live in saint louis

hmm interesting

texas v. minnesota

then duke

duke may struggle against a tubby smith team…but would massacre texas imo b/c they turn it over too much

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

Minny doesn't have the talent

They’re not good enough to beat Duke. 9 times out of 10, Duke wins. Texas has enough talent for that to be intriguing.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

texas will not beat duke

no way, no how…mark it down….they are too poorly coached…they have talent, but are crazy with the ball…that’s the kind of team duke kills a la fsu today

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Kills = 10 points?

I don’t think Texas will beat Duke, but there’s no shot Minny does, either.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

ahhh washington state??

vasquez totally deserved the game changing award, he was terrific for the whole game, not just for one shot

by fedfan64 on Mar 15, 2009 6:30 PM EDT reply actions

Haha LSU

is going to ge destroyed by Butler

by machphantom on Mar 15, 2009 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

maybe..maybe now

butler did just lose to cleveland state

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

then on the bottom

clemson
michigan

oklahoma

that is my must watch bracket

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn't look good for us

Cal is incredibly good at threes, and we don’t have the size to exploit them. Fortunately, they don’t have the size to exploit our lack of size, either.

by Ben Broman on Mar 15, 2009 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

live by the three...die by the three

we don’t have the size…but good luck keeping mosely off the glass with your skinny pretty boy guards who shoot three’s

take a deep breath…we are playing on house money….and we will be a tough, tough out for anyone….because we never, ever give up

by tiimbitz4786 on Mar 15, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Can I also say...

I now have an even bigger reason to root for my local Cal State Northridge to beat Memphis. It’s not going to happen, but i’m happy all of my friends are gonna get the thrill of them watching an important game against a great team.

by machphantom on Mar 15, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

Good luck, Terps! Should be a fun game.

I just hope I don’t have to hear any “JUST LIKE FOOTBALL” chants!
