Critics Shell Williams
Ha! A pun!
"Since winning the national title in 2002, Williams has signed just two prospects ranked among the nation’s top 50 in Rivals.com’s annual recruiting rankings. Even worse, critics said, is that he continues to show little interest in high-level players who attend high school less than an hour from Maryland’s campus."
Article is very critical, but it's still a good read to hear that side of the argument. I don't think anyone will argue that Gary doesn't like to recruit, but it's a bit of overkill.

I disagree
This article is not overkill. Do we need to hit MD fans in the face with a bat to make them realize: PG COUNTY IS THE BEST SPOT TO RECRUIT IN THE ENTIRE NATION. What the hell is wrong with Gary for not recruiting those kids? It’s fine if he doesn’t want gangsters, but tons of high quality kids come out of there and MD HAS GOTTEN ZERO OF THEM. It pretty much makes me lose my mind when I read about how good the kids in the greater DC area are. It’s no coincidence that Georgetown heavily recruits those kids and is now tremendously successful. And they run a clean program too. Is Gary trying to win or just trying to run a team the way he wants to? He’s definately feeling the heat of the national spotlight because he’s compromising his ‘program values’ by recruiting someone with a past like Lance Stevenson. He would have never recruited a kid like that in the past.
"Is Gary trying to win or just trying to run a team the way he wants to?"
Both. Gary knows he can’t deal with a prima donna. The personalities don’t mesh. Like the article said, he hasn’t adjusted yet. And yes, he never would’ve recruited Lance in the past. That’s a good sign – if this turns out well, Gary may realize that it’s a boon to have these guys. And make no mistake, when Gary wants to, he can be a great recruiter.
Also, he’s gotten good players that just don’t turn out – Gilchrist, Bowman, Evans, Jennings, Maze, etc. I agree that Gary should work harder on the trail, but the article made it sound like he went out of his way to avoid recruits and is one of the worst coaches in the NCAA. (And it’s bad timing – he got BR to consider Maryland, after all.
