Dino

To all those people who were 100% sure that Dino would not start after Jordan Williams play over the course of the season.... After speaking with an inside source to the team I was informed that Dino Gregory will be starting. With this being said I really hope getting him back in the lineup we see our rebounding numbers improve drastically. Also it would awesome to see Dino's return mark the "return" of the old GV. What do you guys think?

NOOOO!!!

I like Dino, but Jordan Williams has filled the void so well. Plus, if we let Williams get the starting job all four years, he could develop into something special. That being said, as long as we still give Williams a good amount of minutes, then I’m fine with Dino starting. But from what I remember about Dino’s play, he’s only alright. Hopefully, he made significant improvements over the off-season.

Are we sure they aren't both starting?

In another thread, there was some good discussion about different lineup options. To me, the most likely seems to be:

GV-SM-LM-DG-JW

With Hayes the first guy off the bench. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of EH getting a few minutes to observe the game. He’s a cerebral player and if you can convince him a 6th man role doesn’t mean diminished PT, I don’t see why this wouldn’t work. Gives LM some time at the 3 with DG at 4 and JW at 5, a combination I like.

All that said, I would not be surprised to see a straight-up DG for JW swap against Eastern Kentucky…mostly because they don’t have anyone over 6’7". I highly doubt that JW will be on the bench against the bigger, stronger ACC competition.

Dino

Kind of let the team down by getting suspended by the school. I understand that he served a punishment but I don’t think he should walk into a starting spot unless A. The team is in favor of it and B. he is busting his ass in practice and playing really well.

A and B...

…are probably both true.

Blast

I can see why, but it’s still annoying. We’ll have to see how Dino handles it.

I agree..

with kckb8. With that being said I never said that JWill def wasn’t starting I was just informed that DIno would be.

Who is your source?

I’m not saying what you said isn’t true or that you’re lying, it just seems to contradict Gary’s history with players missing extensive time due to injury or suspension – they, at least initially, come off the bench before resuming a starting role. I just don’t see this happening, personally. That being said, Gary seems to think that Dino got screwed on this and knows that Dino has helped Jordan and James develop a lot thus far, so maybe this is Gary’s way of rewarding him?

probably for depth

This way we don’t ever have to see Jin Soo, because if Williams and Dino were to get in foul trouble at the same time Padgett and Choi would have to get a lot of minutes. Too bad we don’t have Burney or we’d be super-deep in the post.

That said, Millbourne simply cannot hang with real 4’s as proven in the Villanova game and the second half of the season last year…

I’d bet that for bigger teams, like Clemson or GT for instance, we will see both of them starting or playing a ton of minutes. And as this site has said before, GW puts more stock into who is out on the floor at the end of the game more than at the beginning. Dino was ALWAYS that kind of player for us last season in every big game I can remember.

Dino

Jordan has earned a starting spot. Dino should get considerable PT but work into game shape the next 3-4 games. If we’re losing on the boards now, how do you think we’ll compensate with rotating JW, DG and JP? I agree that we need two of those 3 on the floor at the same time. We need Mosely out there as much as possible. That leaves AB, CT and Jin Soo cooling their heals but so be it if we win. Milbourne is a stable force that helps avoid those offensive swoons for 5 minutes+ that we have become acdcustomed to (he he hits those step back jumpers consistently). So my five are GV, SM, LM, JW and DG (with Hayes and Padgett first off the bench to spell GV and JW/DG).

DG for JW

Moving Dino into the starting line up for Williams makes absolutely no sense. We had trouble all last year because we had no size in the middle. Dino is 6’7" (maybe) and 220lbs (maybe) and simply can’t compete with bigger stronger centers in the ACC. He is really a forward. Williams is 6’10" and 260 and is tailor made for the ACC. He has great hands and unbelievable upside potential. The best way for Williams to grow and improve is by playing. That will make a huge difference in March. Putting up 19 and 13 against the #3 team in the nation is more than enough to keep him in the starting line-up. This is vintage Gary and why so many people get fed up with him. The guy who should start should be the guy who is the better player not the guy who has been in the program the longest and is next in line. And people wonder why Gary can’t get the top notch players. No matter how you cut it, if you are not starting then you are not getting the minutes. Williams has earned it and needs the minutes. He gives us the first true post presence in many years.

are you a fan or a hater...

it’s tough to tell with your post…

these are your terps…including DG…i’m sure he’d take offense to you saying that jwill is better than him at this stage…even gary would disagree…he’s called DG our best inside player several times this year

by tiimbitz4786 on Dec 13, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

I do see your point

But might JW take offense to being called worse than DG when he put up a double-double against a top 3 team? It goes both ways.

Everyone wants to win, people just have different opinions on how it can be done.

by Ben Broman on Dec 13, 2009 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

exactly...

settle down, tiimbitz. us fans have the right to discuss this kind of stuff. sure, sometimes we take it too far, but comments like Ch1357’s are just fine, IMO.

Jordan will start

Gary has one year with both Jordan and Greivis. Jordan has great upside and shown that he is a quick study. The team is in transition and very different than last year’s. They can score. Greivis needs a few more games to figure out his role. Gary knows the potential they have when things fall in place. We already get short periods in games when they show us what they are capable of doing. Dino starting is too big of a change. It takes away too much inside scoring. I see Dino getting most of his playing time subbing for Landon especially if Landon doesn’t get more aggressive. Dino will also sub for Jordan.

i think

both will start in a few games if they both produce like crazy. idk who the odd man out will be.
