Maryland Minute 11.19.09 - Tobias Who? Men's Soccer Advances in College Cup

Can the boys repeat for their third title in five years? They took one step forward today.

Can the boys repeat for their third title in five years? They took one step forward today.

I'd be remiss not to mention the Tobias Harris decision today.  I'll say this: it was fun while it lasted.  As Ben posted before, our 2010 class is still good and they still should be somewhere in the top 15 range.  Regardless, it'd be nice to get a Top 10 recruit just once.  Anyway, here's some non-Tobias related links...

Men's Soccer Advances to Second Round of the College Cup

Sasho and Co. knocked off rival Loyola (Md.) 2-1 this evening with goals from Casey Townsend and Drew Yates in the 34th and 36th minutes, respectively. They'll take on Penn State this Sunday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Who are the contenders in this year's College Cup?

Maria Burns Ortiz from ESPN thinks the Terps have as good a shot as anyone.

Ranked in the top 10 nationally for all but one week this season, the Terps certainly will be favored to make an impact in the tournament. Although he can at times come across as sounding reserved about his team's chances, Cirovski believes the Terps have the ability to be successful in the postseason.

"I still think we have a very good run inside of us," Cirovski said. "We're not done yet."

Friedgen undeterred by troubling season - Dinich

Actually a pretty nice piece on the Fridge. It gives me some hope. Kind of.

Star-divide

Maryland fans 2nd rudest in ACC

I'm a little surprised with #2.  I thought for sure we'd be #1.  In case you're wondering, Miami beat us out for the top spot.

Fiery Williams gets Terps cooking - Baltimore Sun

Nothing groundbreaking but a nice read, nonetheless.

Carroll's curtain call - D1SCOURSE

At least there's one feel-good Terps story today. Injured players usually don't travel to away games but Ralph Friedgen is making an exception for injured senior, Nolan Carroll, who is from Florida area.  Carroll is expected to be one of the team's captains when they take the field Saturday against FSU.

GT falls to Dayton in Puerto Rico Tip-Off

It's not as bad as it sounds. Dayton is ranked #21 in the country and they're actually a pretty decent team. Still, this should only strengthen Ben B.'s claims of GT being overrated. In case you were wondering, everybody's favorite ACC freshman, Derrick Favors, had 10 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

Future Opponent Villanova Nearly Loses to George Mason

Best possible situation: Villanova shows how they're beatable and that they're beatable, but still win to preserve a good RPI. I feel like we have a shot in this game. - Ben B.

My Take: It'd be easier if we didn't have to go up against a 25 year-old center

Oh Georgia Tech

I can’t believe that happened. I’d like to see them live up to their potential one day.

Don’t hate on Derrick Favors though, he’s 100% legit.

Is Jerry Angelo fired yet?

Favors is good

But not good enough to make a pretty terrible team suddenly very good.

<3 UMD Soccer

By far one of the best UMD programs of the decade. Some of the most entertaining games you’ll ever see.

Cheers to the boys and best of luck to them as they take on Penn State in the second round.
