So this means he’s chosen Maryland? 100% for sure? Would our recruiting class move up in the ranks with Pankey?
He is still visiting Houston, so nothing is set in stone.
I wouldn’t stress too much about class rankings. Pankey is currently a three star player, but could improve to four star this season. He didn’t have a ton of playing time last year at St. Anthony’s but looks to be in line for a lot more this season. We will have to see where it shakes out.
Our final place in the rankings will have more to do with who our fifth commit ends up being. If it is T. Harris, then we skyrocket up. If it is someone else, look for us to end up around 15 or so.
it isnt 100% decided
But I’d be shocked if he ended up at houston. This is purely a comparison visit, and houston isn’t better than maryland in any sense.

Assuming we get Pankey, that means we will have 3 underclassmen at the PF spot. Do you think that will have any impact on whether or not Tobias Harris decides to come to UMD? I realize he is head and shoulders above all 3 of these players and would start over them (most likely), but I would think that is still something he would consider when deciding what school he goes to.
I think the following:
1. My sense is that they see Jordan Williams as a 5, not a 4, moving forward.
2. Tobias considers himself a “point forward” . . . this is a very different role than either Pankey or James play. Our current crop of big men are more clean up under the basket types, while Harris is a ballhandler, passer, penetrator, shooter, dunker type. I actually think it helps that he knows we have folks slotted for clean-up duty, which means he will be able to get away from the basket must more frequently.
3. I just don’t think he is concerned about playing time at Maryland . . . if he is as good as folks say, he will definitely get it here. The benefit of Gary’s flex offense is that he can be put on the court to replace any number of folks and comfortably play what most teams consider the “3” “4” or even “1” or “5” if needed.
