ACC Preseason Poll Out: Maryland #5, Vasquez In First Team

Today was the ACC basketball media day (almost there), and with that comes the ACC preseason poll. Pretty expected, except for Clemson's high ranking and Georgia Tech's first place votes:

1. Duke (25 first-place votes) 545 points

1. North Carolina (20) 545

3. Clemson 409

4. Georgia Tech (2) 387

5. Maryland 378

6. Wake Forest (1) 315

7. Florida State 314

8. Virginia Tech 273

9. Boston College 251

10. Miami 135

11. Virginia 116

12. N.C. State 76

PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE

Greivis Vasquez, Maryland 45 votes

Trevor Booker, Clemson 44

Kyle Singler, Duke 43

Malcolm Delaney, Virginia 24

Ed Davis, UNC 21

PRESEASON ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Singler 19

Vasquez 15

Booker 8

Not really sure I agree with Duke being so high with basically only two established guards on their team and no Gerald Henderson, but pretty straightforward.

It was great to see Vasquez near-unanimous first team, though I think he maybe should've been the POY too (just my inner homer speaking). Singler is perennially overrated, unfortunately.

Any thoughts, other than "Thank god for basketball season"?

Has Clemson done anything ever?

This needs to get here right quick.

re: Terps being #5

Maryland is always not going to get much respect because we don’t have any “homer” writers voting in these polls. When I cover games for DC Sports Box and do the post-game interviews with Gary, he talks about how no writers in the ACC Writers Association are actually from Maryland. Most are on Tobacco Road. The issue is, writers must be invited to become members and no one for any of the major papers in MD or DC have been invited. So, I always take some of these preseason rankings with a grain of salt. But at least they gave Vasquez the credit he’s due…

Duke isn't very good right now

Just saw Duke vs Pfieffer(?) College in Durham. Not really impressive at all. Singler can play, the Plumlee’s can jump and the Kelly kid looks good. Besides that, the big white guy in the middle would be the sixth man at Dematha (maybe) and Pfieffer actually matched up well with them for large parts of the game, though the score was totally one sided due to their huge height disadvantage. Scheyer just disappears for long stretches. Not sure they have anything like #1 in the ACC talent. I can’t see them beating Maryland twice and I can’t see them ever beating UNC or Clemson.

Just my two cents. Other Terpers in attendance were equally unimpressed.

Duck Fuke

Thank god it’s basketball season….and I agree with you’re confusion about Duke. They always get special treatment from the media. But it’s ok, I’d rather have them be ranked in the Top 10 when we go into cameron and beat them… Let’s go Terps!
