Maryland-VT Open Game Thread
Maryland Terrapins at Virginia Tech Hokies, Nov 6, 2008 7:30 PM EST
We control our destiny. Let's go out there and dominate!
Early word from ESPN is that Glennon will start, but may not play the entire way. Good news for us; Glennon isn't always great and probably won't be as good as normal, due to the injury.

Good start for the D
Maryland’s defense started out the game strong and was able to give the ball to the Terps O.

D-Line struggling
Maryland’s D is going a great job controlling the flats, stopping screens and doing a great job stopping a VA. Tech reverse. They’re getting dominated up front, as Tech’s O-Line, which has between 50-100 lbs. on MD’s d-line, is opening up big holes for Tech’s running back.
On this second drive, Maryland is getting killed up front. IF this doesn’t change, Tech is going to control this game all night with the run
…and now it’s first and goal for Tech.

Some thoughts
Why aren’t we blitzing more? One sack and Glennon could be out of the game! Put some pressure on him.
Also, we won’t be able to let them drive all over us. Their D is too good for us to make up the difference. We’ll need some luck.

Shootout?
This game might have to be a shootout for the Terps to win unless our D can step up and stop Tech’s run.
Lets see if Turner and the offense can respond…

Torrey Smith
Is a beast.
He’s always been one of my favorite Terps (represent Fredericksburg, VA!) but man he is killing it tonight.

I think we should
take out Da’Rel. I love the kid and he’s really talented, but he’s hurt. He’s clearly in pain and hurting the offense as a whole. Time to let him recover and put Meggett in.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:23 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Hey-Bey is amazing
On a 3-18, Turner gives his the ball and he gets out of it and picks up several more yards to make Egekeze’s kick a lot easier.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Offense can't execute
The offense is really having trouble executing when it matters. We drive down the field, then get a false start followed by a bad reverse? Come on, guys.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:26 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Scott
Agreed about Scott…he’s definitely timid and afraid to get hit and turn the ball up field. Where is Meggett?
I could understand not putting him in if he was significantly worst than Scott, but the drop off in talent is very small…

Special Teams are playing like crap
Our coverage has been terrible on every kickoff
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:28 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Sigh
Great job, kickoff team. (sarcasm)
Great hustle by Obi, though. Nice tackle!
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:28 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
There you go!
Great job defense! Major props for that series. TFL, sack, sack. Can’t be unhappy w/ that.

Ask and you shall receive
Looks like Cosh heard you talking…we’ve got pressure on the QB from blitzes all the sudden
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:31 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Man, we needed that
Surprised Meggs couldn’t get that tough yard.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Another stall
Damn it all…we look like two different teams in the beginning and end of these drives…
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well, that sucked
That was even more disappointing.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:39 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Tackling 101
Wrap your arms around and go below the center of gravity guys! Get low!
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:41 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Come on VT
Play normal football, for god’s sake!
(I’m not really angry, but that we can’t stop this formation is pissing me off.)
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Huge 3rd and 5 coming up
If we can hold them to a FG, that would be huge.
The D is going to get tired if our offense keeps stalling during their drives…
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
We can't cover for anything
Yeah, let’s keep playing that weak zone!
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Boone
What’s the deal with him? Why have we never head anything about him before tonight?
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
14-3 VT
This can get ugly if the Terps don’t respond on this drive.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:46 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
He didn't get in!
This is what I hate about instant replay….he clearly didn’t get in, but they just don’t have the right camera angle to overturn it. And how the hell that official way down the other end who signaled TD could see it was a TD is beyond me
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:48 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Don't think it's a huge deal
They would’ve gotten in eventually, IMO
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Need a big play
A big run, a reverse with Hey-Bey…something. We need to score a TD
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:50 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, this isn't good
God, do we need a turn somehow. Unless there’s a lucky bounce, I don’t see the Terps even coming close.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:53 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Wow...horrible
Why do you start a drive running that reverse? Why do you risk that on such an important drive.
And our kick coverage is crappy again
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 8:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Huge play coming up
Gigantic 3rd & 1. Gotta make a stop

F -
Seriously Cosh, there is a reason why you’re no longer a defensive coordinator for any of the awesome coaches you’ve been a coordinator for.

Color guy is right
We’ve stopped blitzing! Come on, defense!
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 8:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
That was a break...
And now Fridge is giving it to Cosh…I wonder if Cosh called the TO and he didn’t know
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Beautiful soft zone defense
Wonderful defense right there.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:03 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
God damn it Cosh
If you’re not going to send pressure on 3rd and a million, don’t give up such a big play!!!
Seriously, fire Cosh after this game
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Okay, could be worse
2 TD score right now
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Who gets the ball first in the 2nd half?
Is it us? If so, this thing could still happen.

New game thread
Let’s switch up the game thread to the halftime impressions….gotta change something.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:09 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Halftime Stats
Only 4 rushing yards for the Terps
129 rushing yards to Va. Tech
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:10 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Okay
I think it’s time to come back and ****ing win this thing. Let’s go Terps!
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:28 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Worst possible start ever
Well, that may be it.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:30 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
The defense just saved the game
Thank you, defense.
The offense really has to do something.
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:32 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
What's w/ the O-Line
C’mon on, O-Line! Block!
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:37 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well, at least there was finally some good kick coverage
Took long enough. Now, defense, let’s get a turnover! This is still a game, no matter how bad we’ve played.

THIS IS FOR THE ACC CHAMPIOINSHIP DAMN IT
COME ON! MAN UP! DIG DEEP!

If we don't score here, it's over
And by score, I mean a TD
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Break we need?
Hopefully we can do something with that penalty
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:47 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Scott looks like a different back all the sudden
Someone lit a fire under his butt
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:47 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
YEEEEEES!!!!!
HEY-BEY!!!
Right back in it!

DHB
That took long enough
It’s a game again, boys!
by Ben Broman on Nov 6, 2008 9:50 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Defense has to respond
Defense has to respond to what the offense just did.
A 3 and out would be huge
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:53 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Backed up and they let that happen
Our defense is terrible.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:55 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
STOP!
Lucky for the D…they should have had 2 sacks and a pick on that drive…but they still hold and we’ll hopefully get a good drive
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Partially blocked punt!
Great field position
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 9:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
What a misplay by Tech
After muffing a punt, Va. Tech’s corners pick up a incomplete pass to Hey-Bey and run 83 yards, despite the play clearly being blown dead. As a result, Tech had to take a timeout so their corners who just ran 83 yards could get a breather,
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:06 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Hey Bey hit
He just got his clocked and the loser on Va. Tech lead with his helmet. Turner also took a late hit and no call.
Tech plays dirty…guess that’s why both Vicks went to school there.
Got a field goal…only down 7 now…

win or lose this game
we are physically not up to the competition. We lose the man to man matchups regularly. If we win because of some big plays I will be happy but we still don’t recruit the kinds of players teh top wenty teams do. That can change, i think the incoming class is a nice one, with a couple of big possibilities still out there (Jelani and Ankreh, are you reading?) but we just get our ases kicked consistently on the LoS. Until we can win that battle, we are a fringe team. We can’t win the big tough one on one battles consistently and that is still where most big games are won. We don’t tackle well enough, drive block well enough, pass block well enough. The fact that we are in this game and our record are mighty big kudos to our coaching staff. But it still all comes down to Franklin and the recruiting.

re: win or lose this game
Couldn’t agree with you more. I think Maryland’s biggest weakness is our D-line. Hopefully this is something, as you point out, that Franklin and the staff will address starting with the 09 class.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I love Fridge
MD was just called for a hold and you could hear Fridge yell “HOW ’BOUT CALLING THAT BOTH WAYS!”
Couldn’t agree more. Tech is holding on every single big run play and nothing is being called.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:20 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Turner not handling pressure
Tech is blitzing like crazy on 3rd and long and Turner can’t handle the pressure…he’s not getting accurate throws.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:21 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Not a catch
They better overturn this…should be 4th down
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:24 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
So catch is good, but spot wasn't
Need to stop them on 4th
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Cosh, why are you so bad?
Why not send pressure? We’re only sending 4 in on 3rd and long.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:29 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Unbelievable
These officials are beyond terrible. Va. Tech RUNS INTO Williams before he snaps the ball and they don’t call anything. NOTHING. Unreal. Un-freaking real. The refs in this game are as ball-less as the Hokies.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
AGAIN TECH HOLDS AND NO CALL!
How much is Boomer paying you ACC refs?
Seriously.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:41 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
We're done
This team can’t step up on D when it has to and it doesn’t have the big play makers on defense to be an ACC title contender this year. I think Terp fans should be happy with an 8-4 record. Maybe 9-4 if we win a bowl game.
by Dave Tucker on Nov 6, 2008 10:48 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
trying to be polite
but only losers whine about the refs
by Lucky Horseshoe on Nov 6, 2008 10:57 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Uh...
Yeah, respectfully disagree.
Not sure what game you were watching, but go look at every big Tech run…it wasn’t a small hold, there was at least one major holding by Tech on each big run. That’s not why we lost, obviously, nor am I saying that if a holding penalty was called that the outcome would be different; when you rush for -12 yards, can’t execute on offense and your defensive line is terrible, you’re not going to win. It was just an additional frustrating aspect of the game.
And only losers whine about refs? Sorry I’m not one of the apparently “elitist” fans in your “no whining” fan club, but when there is bad officiating, I’m not going to stand silent about it. People should complain about bad officiating because players and coaches can’t officially say anything about specific cases of bad officiating.
But coaches do complain generally about officiating. Friedgen sends in tape every week on plays he thinks the officials missed. So I guess every coach in football is whining, loser too…
