Starting 5

It's not 100% clear yet who will be Head Coach Gary William's starting 5 when the basketball season officially tips off Friday against Bucknell at Comcast Center. In their exhibition game against Northwood, the Terps started Milbourne, Tucker, Hayes, Dupree, and Gregory. I doubt this same starting 5 will be your starters on Friday, especially since Vasquez will be back after serving his 1 game suspension for violating team rules. I think it's fairly certain that Vasquez, Hayes and Milbourne will be in there and then it's a toss up. I think you'll see Tucker starting as well as he's really continued to improve his game, can run the point if needed, and has been the most consistent player so far in this young season.  The last and final spot is a toss up. Does it go to Jin Soo Kim, Gregory or Dupree? I don't think it will go to Bowie, because he'll be acting as a back up to Hayes at the point. I think Dupree, while much more slim and athletic than last season, still has some work to do.  So that leaves Gregory, who appears to have improved his inside game a lot over last season, or Kim, who after a shaky first half last week, came back to score 18 second half points to finish tied for a team best 20 points. Kim, as I said previously, is the real deal, complete package player.  I think he has a shot to be a Freshman All-ACC type player. I've heard him compared so far to Joe Smith, Keith Booth and former Dookie Mike Dunleavy. Kim's biggest draw back at the moment is that he just began practicing with the team last Tuesday.  But he appears to be fitting in well with the flex offense, so I think he'll get the nod over Gregory on Friday.

That would mean your starting 5 would be:

Vasquez (G)

Hayes (PG)

Tucker (G)

Milbourne (F)

Kim (F)

Not sure on Kim

As much as I’d like for Kim to start, I’d have trouble seeing Gary go this small. I mean, this is essentially a 3-guard set with two small forwards. I’m a big proponent of this kind of thing – play to your strengths, be the aggressor – but I just can’t see Gary doing it. He’ll probably put it Dupree, which is a little scary. Brax just doesn’t seem ready.
